Agnieszka Borkowska

ARTIST / DESIGNER / OWNER OF THE STUDIO

I deal with artistic ceramics. In 1995, I graduated with honors from the Academy of Fine Arts in Łódź at the Faculty of Visual Education – a diploma in painting in the studio of Romy Hałat.
In 1997-98, I completed one-year postgraduate studies at Kunsthøgskole and Bergen in Norway at the ceramics department.
In 1998, I started working as an individual designer under the Cerama Studio brand.
I currently live and work in Zgierz.
Since the beginning of my work with ceramics, I have gone through all the techniques. I started with low-fired clay, through stoneware, to porcelain, which I value the most. This creative path allowed me to improve my artistic and craft skills in the full range of experiments and experiences with the material.
I started working with ceramics with a series of bas-reliefs using the silica sand casting technique I developed and a series of large sculptural objects in which I tried to combine two materials – stoneware with chamotte and porcelain.
I gradually came to the aesthetics I use now. After years of experience, I have mastered the technique of working with the most difficult material – porcelain. It offers extraordinary technological and aesthetic possibilities, and is at the same time difficult and demanding. It is a material “from the earth”, when colored it becomes opaque, material, in its pure form, thin-walled, it is phenomenally non-obvious and ephemeral. As a material, it is somewhere between ceramics and glass. For me, the most important thing in working with porcelain is the ability to talk about extremely different elements – earth, water, air in one work.
Sculptural objects are a separate part of my work. The inspiration for their creation is, as always, nature. Here I combine different, distant materials: wood worn by sea water, metal, porcelain, stoneware and low-fired clay. Even though I have been doing it for several years, this work is just beginning for me. It gives many opportunities to explore materials and talk about delights and fears in contact with nature.                                                                                                                           Working with functional forms with concentration and deep reflection, I try to find a balance between the aesthetics of the object and its function. I adhere to the principle that beauty ennobles, that by communing with it we become better, we derive pleasure from life, we learn to celebrate it. Using various techniques, I record in ceramics my vision of the surrounding world, my thinking about the object, my desire to strive for perfection.I am inspired by everything: music, nature, friends. I combine art and utility, content and function in small sculptural forms that I create in jewelry. It is also my fascination with infinity and the richness of nature’s forms.
